Okay, here is my installed copy of PS3 Media Server. The main reasons for installing PMS were:

1. to TRANSCODE 1080p MKV files with DTS audio and SUBTITLES without STUTTERING to my PS3. I'm happy to report that thanks
to mplayer-mt this feature is now working 100% on an upgraded TS-509 in my network environment (fully cat6 wired Gigabit Ethernet LAN).
No more hours and hours of tedious MKV2VOB converting for me! :-)

2. to stream my complete (lossless) FLAC music collection to my PS3. This was easy and worked right after 1st install of PMS.

My install is based on PMS version 1.11.369 because later builds have some problems with displaying PMS's Media Library on the PS3.
(at the moment the latest official beta, build 397, has some new features that need to be sorted out on our QNAP NAS first).
However it's easy to use a different version if you want: just copy over the pms.jar and the renderer file that you need!

-----------------------------------
Target NAS models
-----------------------------------
This install is meant for use on an upgraded QNAP TS-509 Pro (4GB RAM and Intel dual-core CPU)

Note: I have ONLY tested this on an upgraded TS-509 Pro because that's the model I own, however it should also work on a TS-809 Pro.
Of course, other x86 QNAP NAS users can also try it on their model, however, you're on your own.

-----------------------------------
Notes
-----------------------------------
* the included mplayer binaries are MULTI-THREADED versions that I compiled myself (I finally managed to compile stuff on my TS-509) :-)
* the Movie Info plugin is already installed and working for IMDB (edit /opt/pms/plugins/MOVIEINFO.conf to add more movie rating sites)
* the optional PMS Media Library works as well but is not activated yet so I could keep the tar file small. If you want to use PMS's Media Library
you can activate it by setting 'usecache=true' in file /opt/pms/PMS.conf
* web video streaming (Youtube etc.) does not work, you could use http://www.ps3youtube.com/ for the time being (open it in PS3's web browser)
* web audio streaming works for several Internet Radio stations, however many don't work
* to stream 1080p MKVs with DTS and subtitles successfully you really should be on wired Gigabit Ethernet LAN

-----------------------------------
Installation
-----------------------------------
1. if you have already installed PMS before goto step 2, otherwise follow the QNAP Wiki PMS installation instructions to install the following software first: JRE, IPKG, CoreUtils and ffmpeg. Follow the instructions until the PMS section starts, and make sure Java is enabled! Now goto step 2.
2. download my installed copy of PMS here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/hdcgnmdtm ... nap.tar.gz
3. copy the file to folder /opt on the NAS (I use WinSCP to copy stuff from a Windows PC to the NAS)
4. ssh into the NAS and goto /opt folder ==> # cd /opt
5. check if a pms folder already exists in /opt, if so rename it ==> # mv pms pms-backup
6. untar and unzip the file ==> # tar zxvf pms_r369_x86_qnap.tar.gz (a folder named pms will be created)
7. change ownership and set permissions ==> # chown -R admin:administrators pms
8. If needed, edit the file /opt/pms/PMS.conf to change the 'folders=' entry to point to the location of your multimedia files.
The path I set in the installed PMS.conf file is 'folders=/share/MD0_DATA/Qmultimedia' meaning: everything on this level and below is shared

DONE! Start PMS as usual and enjoy 1080p MKV transcoding with subtitles working!

# cd /opt/pms (always start PMS from its program folder)
# ./pms.sh & (& = run it in the background)

---------------------------------------------
Optional stuff (once PMS runs okay)
---------------------------------------------
- you can safely remove the renderer configuration files that you don't need from folder /opt/pms/renderers/ so they won't be loaded
each time when PMS starts (I keep only PS3.conf)
- have a look at file /opt/pms/PMS.conf, it contains many settings that you can change for your setup (hide extensions for example)
- have a look at file /opt/pms/WEB.conf, it contains all the web content addresses, add your favourites and see if they work
- turn off Twonky Media Server (from the QNAP web interface), for me it has become completely useless since I'm using PMS
- use this awesome free web app to create great looking covers for your movies: http://www.worldinhidef.com/ps3ms/thumbnailgenerator/
- make PMS start automatically when you boot up your NAS: http://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Running_Your_ ... at_Startup
